I Can Still Hear You
It started with silence.
You know the kind. Not peaceful silence. Suspicious silence. The kind that makes a mama pause, mid-convo, mid-everything and go, “Where my child at?”
That’s exactly what happened the other day. My son had gone too quiet during his supposed toothbrushing routine. And the funny thing is—it wasn’t the silence that bothered me, it was what the silence said.
Because silence speaks. Loudly.
So I called out, “I can still hear you.”
He froze. Probably thought, “Ain’t no way she heard me, I’m not even making a sound.”
But I told him, “I can hear your silence. And that tells me you’re not brushing. I know you’re under that table, eating the toothpaste.”
Yes. Toothpaste.
That boy treats it like it’s candy. And somehow, he thinks if he hides under the table, I won’t notice. Like I don’t know my own child. Like I can’t still see him, even when he thinks he’s slick.
The Power of a Parent's Knowing
It hit me right there in the middle of my kitchen—this is exactly how GOD deals with us.
We be under tables, thinking we hid from HIM. Thinking if we move quiet enough, HE won’t call us out.
But GOD? HE hears the silence.
HE sees the thing we’re trying to sneak behind HIS back.
And HE still calls us out—not to embarrass us, but to guide us back.
Just like I don’t want my son swallowing a tube of toothpaste and messing up his belly, GOD don’t want us feasting on things that look good but aren’t made to go down like that.
Even When You Think You’re Hiding…
We all got our “under the table” moments.
Times we think we’re low-key. Hiding doubt. Hiding bad habits. Hiding pain. Hiding choices we know don’t align.
But GOD is saying, “I see you. I hear your silence. And I still love you.”
Whew.
Scripture to Stand On
Psalm 139:7-8 (NIV)
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”
Even in the hiding, HE’s still present. HE’s still parenting us with love, grace, and truth.
A Mama's Reminder
So now, every time I catch my son trying to go silent and sneaky, I smile a little. Because I get it. I’ve done it too.
But I also remind him (and myself):
“Even when you think you’re hiding, I can still see you.”
And even more than that—GOD can too.
